The church committees at St.John's serve the members of the church as well as the vestry by improving the quality of decision-making while ensuring compliance with policies as well as local, state, and federal laws.

Committees keep the church coordinated!

Hospitality Committee
The Hospitality Committee is designed to provide a reception (if desired) for funerals, confirmations, baptisms, and visitations from the Bishop.  This service is provided through volunteers made up of the parishioners of St. John's.  We provide not only nourishment in the form of refreshments, but we also provide comfort to those who are hurting and give joy to those celebrating both life and death circumstances.  The commitment of our volunteers to His service has provided a warm and caring welcome to all who enter our church.

Mission and Outreach
The Mission and Outreach Committee has a goal of helping those in need within our own congregation and in our community.  St. John’s has partnered with Gadsden Elementary School to provide support when needed.  As a partner, members of St. John’s have been tutors or reading buddies for students, members have donated school supplies for students at the beginning of the school year, and members have donated food items for the Backpack program at the school.  The committee has also supplied clothes for students in need.  In addition, the committee advises the vestry as to where it can donate monetarily in the name of St. John’s in an effort to offer support and continue the tradition of love and caring.  St. John’s often supports Harvest Hope Food Bank, the Women’s Shelter, Senior Resources, Salvation Army, and Oliver Gospel Mission.

Finance Committee
The Finance Committee, though not a standing committee, is a part of the operational structure of the parish. Its members are appointed by the Vestry to assist the Vestry in its duties for the budgeting, oversight, and management of parish finances. The Finance committee has six members: Rector, Senior Warden, Treasurer, and three additional parish members selected by the Vestry. Throughout any calendar year, members of the Finance Committee help the Vestry keep watch on St. John's financial accounts and assist with other financial issues as requested.

Cemetery Committee

The Adams-Weston family gave the land for St. John's on the site of their family cemetery.  Our cemetery actually predates the formation of the church! The original cemetery was expanded in the mid-1970s and there is ample room for our future needs. Every member of St. John's Congaree may reserve space in the church's cemetery.  In addition, there are provisions for non-members who have family buried here to request space for themselves.

Insurance Committee

The insurance committee at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Congaree is responsible for the protection of the parish by insurance policy coverage.  The committee meets annually with a representative for our insurance carrier, Church Insurance Agency Corporation, to confirm that the parish’s insurance needs are being met.  The details of this meeting are noted and reported back by the insurance committee at the next monthly vestry meeting for action if any is needed. St. John’s insurance carrier and coverage are reported in the church’s Annual Audit to the Diocesan House and also at the church’s Annual Congregational Meeting. Due to the size of the parish at this time the committee is made up of one person who has been in this position for 15 years.
