Ecclesiastical Positions

Episcopal Flag_edited.jpg

We are familiar with the rector, but did you know there are other ecclesiastical positions that are a part of our diocese?

  • Priest-in-charge:  The duties are the same as a rector except the bishop appoints this priest and the letter of agreement specifies for how long.

  • Vicar:  A vicar is appointed by the bishop as priest-in-charge of a mission church.

  • Dean:  A cathedral’s rector is a dean.

  • Canon:  The assisting priest at a cathedral is called a canon.  In addition, a canon can be an officer who works for the bishop.

  • Curate:  This refers to an assisting priest, often term-limited for a couple of years.

  • Associate rector/priests associate:  Rectors or priests who assist the rector.

  • Rector emeritus:  A former rector serving in his parish.

  • Archdeacon:  This clergyperson has a defined administrative authority given by the diocesan bishop.

Do you know how to address positions?
