Ecclesiastical Positions
We are familiar with the rector, but did you know there are other ecclesiastical positions that are a part of our diocese?

Priest-in-charge: The duties are the same as a rector except the bishop appoints this priest and the letter of agreement specifies for how long.

Vicar: A vicar is appointed by the bishop as priest-in-charge of a mission church.

Dean: A cathedral’s rector is a dean.

Canon: The assisting priest at a cathedral is called a canon. In addition, a canon can be an officer who works for the bishop.

Curate: This refers to an assisting priest, often term-limited for a couple of years.

Associate rector/priests associate: Rectors or priests who assist the rector.

Rector emeritus: A former rector serving in his parish.

Archdeacon: This clergyperson has a defined administrative authority given by the diocesan bishop.
Do you know how to address positions?
When writing to/about clergy in our church refer to him/her as “The Reverend,”
In speaking, “Mr. or Ms.” or “Father or Mother,” depending on their preference.
